Welcome to the "temporary" location of what is soon to be "apathyiseasy.com"

Good morning/afternoon.

Before we continue, meet Hugh Mann.
He is happy to meet you...somewhat.

Unfortunately, due to technical difficulites involving our site's scripting, and, perhaps more pressing, the cost to publish our site online, we have created this account on blogger.com for the purposes of Earth Day - and our attempt to help others be more aware of the environment - and only for a couple more days until our site is ready. Our site, apathyiseasy.com, was the brain-child of a quaint group discussion in class regarding several matters, of which there were many, but of which all contained a primary essence - apathy. Its prevelance amongst not only our class, but from what we've observed of the world, was a fascinating (albeit not in any way new knowledge) phenomenon. So, here we are - for you to voice your concerns about whatever may strike your fancy as pertinent to the future wellbeing of the human species.

Of course, there is no need to be so ambitious.

This is simply your tool.

This is our step to a brighter, hopefully
more "sympathetic/empathetic" society.

This is our mission.

Please...aid our cause.

Sincerely,

"The 'apathyiseasy' group"

RULES: IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO VOICE YOUR OPINION REGARDING ANY ISSUE (ONE THAT SOMEHOW DEMONSTRATES ACTIVE AND/OR PASSIVE APATHY), SIMPLY POST A COMMENT TO THIS POST. ALSO, PLEASE MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE YOUR NAME AND CONTACT INFORMATION (if you'd like) AND WHETHER OR NOT YOU'D LIKE FOR US TO INCLUDE YOUR ENTRY ON OUR "soon-to-be" SITE.

i'm going and stop the spread of negativity by trying not to fixate on the bad stuff. road rage? WHAT road rage?

I'm going to take cold showers, not just because I don't have a water heater or because I'm trying to remedy the case of the blue balls, but because it conserves energy from using the water heater. But I don't have one so I don't really need to pledge that. So I'm just going to tell people that to take cold showers.

I pledge to throw away my cell phone! Okay, maybe not to over charge it--that way I conserve engergy!

The problem, I find, is that, it is not, necessarily, the youth of today that are so-called, "apathetic," but they, due to such a populated society and the stirring of mass-media and its subsequent numbing of senses, that the youth simply have a difficult time finding an appropriate channel to have permeate their good intentions. While it is true that there are operations which function under the governing principle of "care," and "compassion," and "peace," the masses have this habit of being all too cynical, and instead of appreciating and/or aiding these benevolent causes, they decide to strike and criticize and degrade.

This is saddening.

This is...wrong.

And this is the evil that should be fought and defeated.

This is what matters.

Hi! I pledge to practice safe sex. It's easy to say "do it," but it's not so easy to "do it" responsibly!

I have been telling people that it is in our nature to think about helping the environment...and leave it at that!! I want people to know that nothing is too small to help the environment!!! C'mon Guam...for a small island, we can make the BIGGEST impact!! <3

I pledge to always throw my cigarette butts in the proper receptacle instead of throwing them on the ground.

i pledge to spread awareness about how we all need to care more about our earth and those around us

first off, Hugh Man is a creative and catchy name for your human representative. This blog is such a neat idea, I just love it! Once you have your permanent site, I will link to it from the UOG web site.

Every little bit of awareness and discussion will help to make our University and community a cleaner and more energy and environmentally concious place to live.

Hi guys! Today is officially my favorite day this semester =) I feel like we're changing the world :P And one day, we'll look back at groups who are doing the same thing as we are and smile because they painted their shirts.

In honor of Earth Day, I am reducing the amount of aircon I use at home and while driving, picking up trash (mine and not mine) and recycling plastic bottles and aluminum cans =)

Yay! Awesome!

Apathy is a not an easy term to define. This is the case because its meaning is intepreted differently. Culture, race, and all of the language-barriers which make communication, in certain instances, an arduous process.

What should be attempted, then, is to make forefront the apathy that is prevelant worldwide, and find one, all-encompassing definition of "apathy."

What does this mean to you?

To your parents? To your friends?

To the world?

This is about bringing together what makes us all so different, and unite through pinpointing and embracing our likeness.

Well, I mean, besides:

we all have a little "Hugh Mann" inside of us.

Issues to consider that should be addressed:

"Recycling is easily the most preemptive measure to mitigate pollution. Granted, global warming isn't as severe as news networks make it out to be, but it isn't a myth either."

Anonymous said...

My name is ANNETTE.

We should all be concerned for non-human creatures. We share the Earth with them and we're the ones mainly ruining it. Live and let live.

Anonymous said...

Being apathetic is truly too easy. I can't think of a better day than Earth Day for everyone to pledge to take action. Action to make the Earth that we live in a little better. Today I pledged to not be so wasteful when it comes to food. Minimize what I cook and eat the leftovers instead of creating a new dish.

Anonymous said...

It is very easy, really.

Make it a point to care a little more day by day. Breaking old (and even destructive) habits is hard. HARD. Take it step by step by step. Eventually, your new-found "caring capacity" will gradually flourish and transform into something far more efficacious.

Anonymous said...

To recycle or not? not everyone knows about what to do with their items, well get to know it and
HELP!
Guam needs people like us, our opinions to spread the word.
So, recycle, use less water, help the environment and then..
get something out of it.

I pledge to not only care about what affects the environment harmfully, but to actually do something about it, positively. This earth won't be here for long, so we must take care of it as much as we can until that day comes. :)

I pledge to stay committed to this project that helps the world as well as the entire university know that apathy is easy and that society has stopped caring.

This project has opened my eyes and heart to the act of empathy. It's easy to say we care, but much harder to actually show how much we care.

It started with a conversation...
And it ended in a dare.

A dare to CARE.

This is my response to this dare.

What's yours?

-Jaclyn Lee Quan

As easy as apathy is, easier yet is it to care only of things that affect you. Apathy is destructive, selfishness is corrupting.

Love not just the Earth. Love ALL the universe, which God in His love has given us. Why should only THIS planet, the smaller among a multitude of bigger worlds, be given preferantial treatment? Just because this planet's fate is the only one that will affect us? Abandon such self-centeredness.

On this "Earth Day", let us honor ALL the universe. To truly love God is to love ALL that He has created; not just this insignificant "third rock from the sun."

Think about it.

-John Pereda.

i think we should all think about how the government and private agendas within the infrastructure of our society should be looked at not just through the initial lens of judgement but taken a step back we must learn to interpret the patterns of information gathering and processing and learn to filter the disinformation...

Nice title for your blog. That is so true and really hits the point. Let's all care just a little bit more about what really matters.

Apathy....we have a lot of it...
But what we have right now doesn't seem to be working very well.
If you were a police officer and you knew your grandmother was picking up such
litter each day, you might not be very pleased. You might become upset at the slobs....

"The Slobs"

We already know there are plenty of slobs littering our island home. The police, fire dept., marshals, etc. are unable to control this. But, there is a practical solution. It is “US”....Each and everyone of us can pick up just a few pieces each and every day of the year. We didn't toss the cigarette butt or drop the plastic candy wrapper. We all see it. So, what's stopping us from picking it up? We may not like it but its better than doing nothing about it....

"More on The Slobs"

Perhaps if the people who have the authority to enforce were to see the elderly manamko picking up the litter they might feel upset enough to actually do something about this problem.

Just some thoughts, PT

I just listened to your interview Jourdene. Very well put. I believe your group is like a rain cloud where every drop is one person that forms a river leading to an ocean of neccessary change for our island. Your group has my support.

Somewhere on the wall of pledges in the student center is my somewhat extreme two-part pledge. For the entire month of May, I pledged to not consume any imported meat (so, only locally caught fish, deer, etc...). I also pledged to ride my bike at least twice a week to my destination. I am doing well with regards to the first part of this pledge. I've been a fish-eating pseudo-vegetarian before. But, I have a lot of places to go with a lot of shit to drag around, so riding my bike has been virtually impossible. But, summer is almost here! I figure if I average more than twice a week later in the month, it will make up for the zero average during the first two weeks?? Keep an eye for me on the roads! Man, I need to get some reflective gear. You'll recognize me on campus, I'll be the really sweaty girl...
